About

Hi, and thanks for dropping by.

I’ve been an active climber for over forty years, enjoying all aspects of the climbing game: bouldering, sport, trad’, winter mountaineering, ice and Alpine climbing as well as still doing the odd bit of backpacking and scrambling.

After writing a Ph.D about the function of landscape in the Icelandic sagas, and then a novel about Galileo, I turned my attention to writing about the outdoor activities I’ve spent so much time doing. I’m a regular contributor to outdoor magazines such as Climber with destination articles, reviews, short stories and pieces about the physical and emotional experiences of climbing. In addition, I’ve produced commissioned pieces for websites and assisted in the production of two rock-climbing guides.

I studied for my B.A. and M.Phil at The University of Birmingham and my Ph.D at the University of Leeds.

I live and work near Birmingham in the UK and am currently available for writing and research commissions.
